This $12,000,000 dollar sports complex was built in response to the pressing need for a countywide recreational facility, particularly after the loss of many public spaces and services due to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. None of the local governments within Hancock County had the financial resources to rebuild or replace the full range of facilities that had been lost, so the development of the sports complex was crucial in restoring access to sports, fitness, and community gathering spaces.
The facility serves as a key asset to the county, offering a wide range of sports and recreation amenities that benefit the entire community. It not only provides the region with essential sports infrastructure but also helps bring people together, fostering a sense of community and resilience in the aftermath of one of the most destructive natural disasters in the area’s history.
The Complex will be constructed in 5 different Phases to include recreational facilities as follows:
- Eight (8) lighted softball/baseball fields
- Six (6) lighted tennis courts
- Four (4) lighted basketball courts
- Ten (10) lighted soccer fields
- Two (2) lighted football fields
- Eight (8) open air pavilion areas
- Four (4) Concession stands, complete with press boxes, and restrooms
- Parking areas to accommodate one thousand (1000) vehicles
- Approximately seventy (±70) acre instructional elevated nature trail.
- Youth playgrounds
- Eight (8) lighted softball/baseball fields
- Eight (8) open air pavilion areas
- Two (2) Concession stands, complete with press boxes, and restrooms
- Parking areas to accommodate three hundred (300) vehicles.
- Five (5) lighted soccer fields
- Parking areas to accommodate two hundred (200) vehicles.
